COMORBIDITIES

Sexual sadism disorder usually presents with other paraphilic disorders e.g. masochism and fetishism. This disorder as stated usually presents with other personality disorders. Sometimes the combination of sexual sadism disorder and a personality disorder can prove problematic. An example of this is a client who presents with sexual sadism disorder and antisocial personality disorder. This combination has been seen predominantly in sexual offenders e.g. rapist and sexuallymotivated murderers. (Hucker 2004-2011)

PREVALENCE

Many times the activities involved in sexual sadism disorder are with nonconsenting partners so there may be quite a bit of underreporting. The determination of prevalence is also determined on what criteria are used. These discrepancies have caused the estimation of people with this disorder to be between 2% to 30%. It must be noted that despite these issues most studies have shown that sexual sadism disorder is more prevalent in males.

MANIFESTATION

There are variations of how sexual sadism disorder can or will manifest. Some sufferers are distressed by the feelings that occur. These individualsmay suppress the compulsions that they feel. Others may be able to find a willing participant usually a masochist. A masochist’s willingness to be subjected to pain and humiliation can give the sadist a consenting partner in the role play. However, there are the rest who may give into their compulsions with nonconsenting partners. Sexual sadismis a common trait found in many sexual offenders. Some have evolved to the point where their sadistic obsessions result in the death of the victim(s) e.g.Jeffrey Dahmer and Richard Cottingham.(Geberth 1980)

TREATMENT

Many individuals who have sexual sadism disorder do not voluntarily seek treatment. Those who end up in treatment areusually there because they have involved a nonconsenting partner or their actions have caused injury or death. Individuals who present with sexual sadism disorder may be treated via a combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy.
